Exterior Door Restoration - Structural Repair & Finish

Initial condition
The exterior door was in poor condition after years of exposure. Multiple layers of old paint were failing, the wood showed clear wear around the hardware, and the frame itself had come loose from the wall. The door had play and no longer sat firmly in the opening.

Repair-first approach
Although full replacement is often suggested in cases like this, the door and frame were structurally recoverable. A repair-first solution made sense: less waste, lower cost, and a result that could last for many more years when done properly.

Disassembly and preparation
All metal parts were removed before any surface work began. The door, frame and interior edges were stripped back, sanding through several previous paint layers to remove imperfections and expose a clean, stable base. Both exterior and interior surfaces were treated with the same level of care.

Structural correction of the frame
The door frame had shifted and was no longer securely anchored to the wall. It was re-levelled, fixed back into position and properly secured to eliminate movement. Gaps around the frame were then filled and sealed to restore rigidity and ensure a clean junction with the wall.

Finishing and compliance
Once the structure was corrected, surfaces were sealed and repainted. The final colour followed the official colour code required by the property contract, restoring a consistent appearance while meeting building requirements.

Result
The door now sits correctly in the opening, opens and closes smoothly, and is structurally sound. The finish is clean on both sides, the frame is solidly anchored, and the result combines durability, proper construction and a professional appearance not just a cosmetic repaint.
